Name of walk | Brass & Bells: Ulverston to Urswick |
Date of walk | 2017-09-09 |
A busy Saturday! Playing for the Ulverston Charter Day late morning, then ringing bells at Kirkby in Furness and Great Urswick in the afternoon.
Market Cross in Ulverston. The band tent is on the left.
Anna and I share a joke before we start.
The band. If you're wondering where the conductor is, Gill is playing the trombone and conducting simultaneously! Note the slope....we were told to practice playing at an angle!
The 1st cornet section, Anna (who is actually playing a trumpet), me and David.
We have five pieces to play, ranging from Offenbach to Robbie Williams. My personal favourite is The Floral Dance which has become an unfortunate 'ear worm' for my son. He now hates it! Last week he moved to London....so job done! ;-)
There was a certain degree of relief in getting to the end with no major cock-ups. We take a bow, but then as an encore play "Let Me Entertain You" one more time.....irony?
The 'other' band take our place. They were better, but we got more applause as we made the most of the "Aw bless!" factor. They have more players than us, so Gill can stop multi-tasking and go back to conducting from the front.
Just time to get home and change from one uniform to another and drive to Kirkby in Furness to ring the bells at St. Cuthbert's Church. I had my mobile with me not my camera, and the lens was a bit greasy, so I have used some of Andy Pollock's (AP) photos too.

Barrow Tower Captain, Andy 'hovering' next to Jason. Seven Barrow ringers made the meeting.
Millom Tower Captain, Jeg, is busy revising Cambridge Major. You know what they say...if you don't know it by now........
It looks like its all getting too much for Kevin! (AP)
We girls know our place! (AP)
Cameron and Jason do their homework between rings.
Sue descending the ladder.
En route to Urswick via the Cumbrian Cow Ice Cream place, we take a little diversion to get the view from Kirkby Moor. (AP)

The ice creams are enormous! Two scoops is more like eight! (AP)
Ken, sensible as ever, goes for a single scoop. (AP)
The look of disbelief....tinged with pure, unadulterated greed! Mine was one scoop of rhubarb and ginger and one of coffee. Sue was as sensible as Ken! (AP)
Now you know why we were late for ringing at Urswick.....you just can't hurry a good ice cream! (AP)
Barrow ringers with their ice creams. A view to The Hoad in the background.
Cumbrian Cow
All eaten!
Looking back to The Hoad in Ulverston.
Suitably fortified we arrive at St. Mary and St. Michael's Church in Great Urswick.
Is this a Leicester sheep? Or possibly a Merino?

Today was Sue's first ring at Kirkby and Urswick. (AP)

Looking up at the ringing room from the altar. Andrew reading the information booklets available.
Just time to mow the lawn when I got home, before the rain. Then feet up for Strictly! 🙂
