Buttermere Circuit & Rannerdale Bluebells

Name of walk Buttermere Circuit & Rannerdale Bluebells
Date of walk 2025-04-29

On Tuesday Ged and I drove to Buttermere, parking in the NT car park. Now that Ged is 85 the high fells are beyond him, but he was up for a 5 mile flat walk around the lake.

01

View down Buttermere towards Fleetwith Pike. We're not early enough for good reflections.

02

Slopes of Robinson.

03

View back to the bridge we crossed and over to Whiteless Pike and Grasmoor.

04

05

Robinson and Hindscarth.

06

We had plenty of bench breaks to admire the views.

07

Now that's a house I'd like to live in.

13

We cross the bridge with views of Fleetwith Pike and Haystacks. We meet and chat to two eldery Americans from Virginia who are doing a clockwise circuit and we meet them again later.

14

View up the lake.

15

Once we reach Gatesgarth there is a small bit of road walking before we are back on the lakeside path.

16

High Crag and High Stile.

17

Classic Buttermere view of the pines.

18

We have lunch on the elevated memorial seat just off the main path.

Not a very good photo of a Pied Flycatcher. It was catching insects and returning to it's nest in the tree hole. We watched it do this several times.

33

On returning to Buttermere we had a coffee then moved on to Rannerdale. The field was open and we were charged only £3 to park and visit the blue bells, very reasonable, especially as it was supposed to be £4 for all day. There was a coffee and cake stall and seating too. Ged accompanied me to where I took this photo, then sat on a rock while I continued to do a circuit returning via the Cinderdale car Park and back along the road. He would return back to the car the way we had come.

34

The blue bells were almost in full bloom. The lady on the coffee stall said that given the weather they should be at their best come the weekend.

35

I cross the bridge. Whiteless Pike on the left.

36

37

Mellbreak and Crummock Water.

38

Rannerdale Knotts.

48

View back to Rannerdale as I head towards the Cinderdale car park. It was still packed.

Sign in local dialect near the Cinderdale car park.

Two easy walks my combined mileage was eight miles. The weather was excellent, very warm for April.
