Greendale: Middle Fell

Name of walk Greendale: Middle Fell
Date of walk 2025-06-16

I had walked Middle Fell, Seatallan and Buckbarrow again only three months ago, so today I would go up to Middle Fell and return via Greendale Tarn, a walk of about four miles. The weather looked promising, but there was a bit too much low cloud around to include Haycock. I’ll save that for an excellent visibility day.

01

Looking up at Middle Fell from Little Greendale's patio. I set off about 7.15am.

03

Looking back to Little Greendale where I am staying for the week.

04

Greendale Gill, my route up is on the right of the gill.

05

The way ahead.

06

Good views back to the cottage.

07

08

I take a right here and head up to Middle Fell, but my return route would be back this way.

09

10

The clouds are over the Wasdale Screes, like they were yesterday.

11

12

Clouds over Seatallan.

13

Now clouds over Buckbarrow.

14

Haycock in the distance.

15

Thankfully my route up to Middle Fell is clear of cloud.

16

Middle Fell summit with the Scafells on the right.

18

I head down a bit to sit in the shelter of some rocks. Yewbarrow on the left, then Lingmell, Scafell Pike and Scafell.

19

A memorial is tucked away here.

20

I sat for 30 mins taking in the view and warming myself in the sunshine, then I headed back to the summit and the path down to Greendale Tarn. The clouds were coming over again.

21

Seatallan.

22

The route to Haycock.

23

When I reach the coll I turn left for Greendale Tarn.

24

25

The ground conditions were rather wet so I had to take a higher level walk. In drier conditions I have walked the length of the tarn right next to it.

26

I head back down to the outflow, I find somewhere to cross the gill, as the route back down is on the other side.

27

I begin my descent.

28

The path is very rough underfoot and extremely wet in places, but it improves as you go down.

29

31

Confluence of gills.

32

I can now see the cottage.

The four mile walk took me five hours, but I did sit in the sunshine for quite a while in various places, as I was in no rush.
