On Thursday Ged, Kas and I went to Kentmere with the intention of doing the Kentmere Horseshoe. Unfortunately the hill fog was down to 200ft and as I`ve already done Yoke, Ill Bell and Froswick in mist I saw no point in doing it again! We decided to walk up the valley and around the reservoir and if the weather clears to go up the Nan Bield Pass to Harter Fell (2552ft), Kentmere Pike (2397ft) and Shipman Knotts (1926ft)…..half a horseshoe!
There are only about 8 car parking spaces in Kentmere and luckily we got the last one. We headed up the valley towards the reservoir. A cute calf.
Still lots of hill fog.
We have had no rain for about a month so the reservoir outflow is empty.
Now it rains.....typical!
Investigating the outflow and the dam.
As we walk around the reservoir the fog starts to lift and the colours emerge. Lingmell End ahead.
Looking back to the dam.
The waterfalls of the River Kent.
Looking back as we make our way to the way back to the dam.
Looking across to the quarries as we make our way up to the Nan Bield Pass.
We detour to one of the quarry tunnels.
Hill fog nearly all gone.
Looking over at Ill Bell and Froswick.
On the Nan Bield Pass that leads to Mardale, heading for the shelter just left of centre in the dip.
Looking down on the Kentmere Valley from the top of the pass. Windermere top left.
Looking down towards Mardale on to Small Water and Hawes Water.
Hawes Water.
We stopped for lunch in the shelter.
Then we headed on up to Harter Fell. Looking across to Mardale Ill Bell and down on Small Water with Blea Tarn above it. Riggindale to the right and then Kidsty Pike
Harter Fell summit.
View to Kentmere Pike. Just follow the fence line.
The trig point is on the other side of the wall.
Between Kentmere Pike and Shipman Knotts is Goat Scar, an excellent view point for Branstree and the Gatescarth Pass.
View down to the pass and across to Tarn Crag
Turning to the right gives the view down into Longsleddale......A detour worth making!
Shipman Knotts summit looking over to Yoke, Ill Bell and Froswick.
We headed down to the pass that leads from Sadgill in Longsleddale, and followed it right back to Kentmere. Cute black lamb!
View of the Horseshoe.
We took the public footpaths back to Kentmere coming out at St. Cuthberts.
A good display of embroidery!
