High Raise & 5 other fells from Hartsop

Name of walk High Raise & 5 other fells from Hartsop
Date of walk 2025-05-01

Thursday was going to be a hot, sunny day so I drove to Hartsop and was walking for 7.30am. I had planned to walk up to The Knott, Kidsty Pike, High Raise, Rampsgill Head, Rest Dodd and The Nab. A walk of 9 miles.

01

View to Hartsop Dodd.

02

For a change I take the path that leads to the Filter House. Back at the car park notices say that Hayeswater bridge is down and advise to cross by the Filter House bridge and continue walking up on this side. I don't fancy doing that as the route looks awkward, and reckon that the gill will be passable after this dry weather.

03

So I cross the bridge in the opposite direction to the instructions and head up to the main path.

04

Looking back down on the Filter House from the main path.

05

Hayeswater bridge on the left after easily crossing the gill. Glad I took no notice of the notices!

06

Hayeswater from my route up the grass to The Knott. It is very warm.

07

I reach the main path that I would walk on later this afternoon. No photos of the way ahead as it is against the light.

08

The route to Rest Dodd with The Nab beyond, that I will take later. I continue up the main path towards The Knott and turn off by the wall.

09

The Knott summit cairn.

10

View down to Hayeswater.

11

Looking back to The Knott as I head for Kidsty Pike.

12

Route to High Street from the Kidsty Pike turn off.

13

Riggindale and Haweswater. Harter Fell and Mardale Ill Bell on the right.

14

Kidsty Pike on the left.

15

View into Riggindale from Kidsty Pike summit.

16

This is on the Coast to Coast route, but too early for walkers.

17

High Street from Kidsty Pike summit.

18

Route to High Raise.

19

High Raise summit cairn. I have my apple and a drink in the shelter.

20

View down Ramps Gill to Martindale and Ullswater. On the right the route to Wether Hill and Loadpot Hill. The Nab on the left.

22

I keep to the edges for the views and continue on to Rampsgill Head. View to Rest Dodd and The Nab.

23

View down the valley from Rampsgill Head.

24

Lots of mountains in view from the summit cairn.

25

Another view this time straight down the valley.

26

I head down to the main path just below The Knott. On the main path I meet quite a few Coast to Coast walkers on their way up, Americans, Australians, Chinese.

27

I head off path to reach the wall and the path up to Rest Dodd.

28

View back to The Knott from the steep ascent of Rest Dodd.

29

I can now see back to Hayeswater.

30

Brotherswater.

31

Rest Dodd summit, a bit windy!

32

Rest Dodd summit view.

33

View to Brock Crags Angle Tarn and Angle Tarn Pikes. Helvellyn range beyond.

34

Close up of Angle Tarn.

35

I head down the other side of Rest Dodd towards The Nab. The Peat Hags should be dry.

36

The way through is at the end of the wall.

37

The view in the other direction to Rampsgill Head, and a sheep.

38

Easy walking today as the bogs are dry.

39

The Nab summit looking back to Rest Dodd. My return is by the path behind the wall going up right. More up......wonderful!

41

View north.

42

I head back through the bogs. There are no deer around so when near the wall and I spot a path that cuts the corner off, I take it.

43

The path leads to a hole in the wall, so I sit on the broken wall and have a break looking down Bannerdale and back to The Nab.

44

View back along the wall and to the short-cut path.

45

I follow the wall up and come out here, overlooking Angle Tarn and Brock Crags.

46

I continue left and soon come across the main path and views of Hayeswater. I head down across the grass and pick up the path.

47

I have to reach the wall before I head down. I'm planning on a paddle in Hayeswater.

48

Approaching Hayeswater.

49

I dip my feet in the cold water while sat on these rocks..... ahhh!

50

View up to the Knott now the sun isn't behind it. I recross Hayeswater Gill and head back down the main path, which always feels so much stonier on the way down.

51

Baaa!

52

View back from the gate of the two different paths up to Hayeswater.

The 9 mile, 6 fell walk took me 7hrs and 15 minutes. It was a very hot day!
