Longsleddale, a quarry & 3 fells

Name of walk Longsleddale, a quarry & 3 fells
Date of walk 2025-04-02

Today Sue and I would drive to Sadgill in Longsleddale and take the long walk up the path to explore the old workings and ruins of Wrengill Quarry and look for a well hidden but impressive waterfall, before heading directly up to Adam Seat. We would then go over Harter Fell, Kentmere Pike and Shipman Knotts before returning to Sadgill. A circular walk of 9 miles. Blues skies and sunshine today, but we knew it would be windy on the summits.

01

There are public toilets next to the Parish Room opposite St Mary's Church in Longsleddale, so we stopped here.

03

We parked in the roadside spaces at Sadgill at 8.30am. View to our descent route from Shipman Knotts.

04

Our way ahead on the right.

05

View up Longsleddale and the River Sprint.

06

We head up the path. Goat Scar on the left. A view point we will visit later.

07

08

There are many waterfalls and cascades on the way up.

09

We watched a dipper here.

10

Sue crossing the small bridge.

11

View back.

12

The way ahead. Opposite the sheepfold is the gate we go through for Wrengill Quarry. Branstree in the distance.

13

Wren Gill. It was no surprise that we heard a wren!

14

Bridge.

15

We will head up the slope.

16

The bridge from the other side.

17

View down into Wren Gill.

18

View back as we head up.

19

Ruined buildings.

21

Plus bits of machinery.

22

The first quarry/mine and its levels. We didn't go down into this one.

23

I went down into the next quarry.

24

View from the bottom.

25

One of the levels.

26

I head back up and we continue on past the two pillars. We follow a narrow, precipitous track which leads us to the waterfall.

27

The waterfall.

29

I head down for a better view. There is a small cave on the left, not very deep. Views out to Sue sat having a coffee!

30

At the back is a tunnel/level.

31

Lovely, if only it wasn't still cold April! Although I think it'd be chilly even in August! I join Sue for a short break and a coffee, then we head steeply up to rejoin the main track.

32

The stone wall that goes up to Kentmere Pike summit. We turn and go in the opposite direction finding a gap in the wall and walk up to Adam Seat. The route is pathless, but I veer to the fenceline just in case there is a sheep trod to make the tussocks of grass easier to walk up.

33

No sheep trod, but good views down Longsleddale.

34

We make the summit of Adam Seat and a view to Haweswater. It has an H/L inscribed boundary stone from 1924. Just to the left of the stone the main track can be seen. We cross the stile and make a bee-line for it.

35

Haweswater from the main track. The water is low.

36

As we go up Little Harter Fell we spot the stone where Wainwright probably sat for that famous drawing in his pictorial guide to the Far Eastern Fells. Unfortunately Sue has forgotten her pipe!

37

View across to Blea Water with High Street above it.

38

Another Haweswater view.

39

Harter Fell summit with the Coniston fells above it and Bowfell, the Scafells and Great Gable above Red Screes to the right.

40

Navigation is easy....follow that fence! Kentmere Pike on the left.

41

It is very windy on the tops so Sue has her hood up. Yoke, Ill Bell and Froswick are the near fells.

42

We can see the two cairns on top of Ill Bell.

43

Heading for Kentmere Pike. Nice easy walking.

44

Kentmere Pike summit cairn is the other side of the wall, so we cross via the wall stile.

45

We then head back over the wall, out of the wind, for lunch. it is now 12.45pm.

46

Summit selfie.

47

View back to Kentmere Pike summit cairn.

48

We are now heading for Goat Scar on the left. We just follow the fence line, cross a stile and head off for a view.

49

View up Longsleddale towards Branstree.

50

View across to Grey Crag.

51

View back down Longsleddale to Sadgill and beyond.

52

We return to the stile and head left for the big stile over the wall and the path to Shipman Knotts.

53

View back to Kentmere Pike, left, and Goat Scar, right.

54

On the left is Yoke, Ill Bell, Froswick and Thornthwaite Crag.

55

Cairn on Shipman Knotts.

56

We head down by the wall. Skeggles Water in the distance.

57

Heading for Wray Crag.

58

View back up Shipman Knotts.

59

Views into the Kentmere valley.

60

It is always an awkward descent off Wray Crag, especially at the end of a walk. We are heading for the gate on Sue's right. I have only been right before, going to Kentmere, never left down to Sadgill.

61

On the way to Sadgill, a view back.

62

At least it's all down hill.

63

The bridge at Sadgill and the car.

64

One of the houses on the farm track.

The 9 mile walk took us six hours and forty seven minutes. Lovely and sunny weather but a cold wind. We enjoyed the quarry, especially the waterfall. It was well worth the detour.
