Elterwater & Loughrigg Fell

Name of walk Elterwater & Loughrigg Fell
Date of walk 2026-02-17

I parked at Skelwith Bridge at 7.45am and walked to Elterwater, returning the same way, then on up to Loughrigg Tarn and Fell, again returning the same way. The walk was about 5 miles and took three and a half hours.

15

This is where I take another path leading to a gate where I turn left.

16

Looking back at the gate.

17

At this point, just past the first gate, is the way up the fell. Most of it is a pitched path, so it is an easy route up.

18

View back with Loughrigg Tarn on the left and Elterwater on the right.

19

Loughrigg Tarn.

20

Snowy fell view.

21

Crinkle Crags, Bow Fell and the Langdale Pikes.

22

View down the pitched path which is still icy in places.

23

Towards the top I take a left for my first views of Dunmail Raise and Seat Sandal.

24

The Trig Point with the fells of the Fairfield Horseshoe behind and Red Screes on the right.

25

View south to Windermere.

26

Grasmere only just in view from the summit.

27

Close up of Dunmail Raise.

28

I walk north for a view of Grasmere.

29

Daffodil Hotel bottom right.

30

I head back in the direction of my route up. I decided against going down by the path to the Terrace as being in the shade it would be very icy.

31

32

My path down was free of ice.

33

I stopped on the drive home for the views from Kelly Hall Tarn.

Probably one of my favourite walks. I was back home for 12.30pm.
