A walk up Sour Hows and Sallows from Troutbeck Church had been on my list of fells to repeat for a while. The weather was good so I picked Sue up at 7am and we headed for Troutbeck. The walk was about six miles. Easy walking. We set off walking at 7.50am.
Sue heading up the Garburn Pass. The pass leads to Kentmere.
View down the Troutbeck valley to Troutbeck Tongue. To the right is Yoke, Ill Bell and Froswick. We did consider these as a continuation of today's walk, but decided to do them as a separate walk.
View back towards Troutbeck and a thermal inversion over Lake Windermere.
After 25 minutes, Just before the first conifer wood, is the stile we need to cross over. This leads to two more stiles that cross the path to Dubbs Reservoir.
Sue's photo shows the stiles.
The cloudless ridge with the Garburn Pass below.
We head up the ridge of Backstone Barrow. The extent of the thermal inversion comes into view. Dubbs Reservoir on the left.
The backbone of the ridge.
A great view. Ambleside is beginning to clear.
Sunshine on Troutbeck Tongue.
We make our way to Sour Hows summit.
Sue on the summit at 9.30am. There is often a few rocks to mark the summit, but not today, it is bare of any markings.
The cloud has started to come over the Ill Bell range.
Sallows is all the way around the other side, off top right. An easy walk.
View back from the other side after crossing over the stile in the wall.
Yoke.
Me on Sallows summit for 10.10am.
We head off over grass gaining the Garburn Pass to the right of the wood.
Never the most comfortable walking and it is a fair way until we reach the stile from early this morning.
Rather glad we decided against continuing our walk.
Troutbeck and Wansfell.
Jesus Church Troutbeck as we head back to my car parked under the trees at 11.45am. The six mile walk had taken under four hours.
We got rid of our bags and boots and headed steeply uphill, on foot, to The Old Post Office Tea Room in Troutbeck. The last time I was here it was still a post office. We enjoyed a well deserved coffee and cake/scone.
By the front door of the house next door to the post office.
As we walked back down the hill to my car we could look over to the hillside and make out our route up Backstone Barrow. Right of wood.
A good little walk to blow the cobwebs away. The views really need a good weather day.
