Arnison Crag

Name of walk Arnison Crag
Date of walk 2025-01-16

I drove to Patterdale for a walk up Arnison Crag which always has a great view of Ullswater. There are options to contunue on to Birks, and even St. Sunday Crag, but would be dependent on the conditions. The car park is £5 for all day.

01

I stopped on The Promenade on Walney Island and took a photo of Jubilee Bridge at sunrise.

02

It was foggy on the drive beside Windermere. I stopped in a lay-by on the southern side of the Kirkstone Pass. Ambleside and Windermere were covered by a cloud inversion. There was no fog on the northern side.

03

The route is beside the now closed public toilets.

04

There are new signs to mark the correct path.

05

Looking back through the small wood I walked through. I then head through the gate and follow the path up the fell.

06

View back to the wood.

07

Ignore the gate and head up beside the wall. Birks in the sunshine,

08

View of Ullswater from the top of Oxford Crag.

09

View to Birks in the sun. There is no sunshine on my route, so it is chilly.

10

The route up is steep, but easy.

11

View of the summit ridge.

12

The last bits of snow.

13

Summit view with Place Fell on the right. It took me just under an hour to reach.

14

The route to Trough Head and Birks can be seen below. There is a cold, icy wind today, so I decide that I'll not venture up to Birks today. To the left of Birks is St. Sunday Crag, then Fairfield, Hart Crag and Dove Crag.

15

To the right of Birks is the pointy top of Catstycam, then Birkhouse Moor, and further right is Sheffield Pike.

16

The sun is above Hartsop Dodd. High Street and Grey Crag to the left and Hartsop Above How right.

18

Ullswater view. I don't hang around as the icy wind means admiring the view is not something that you want to do for too long, I head back down to the wall and decide to retrace my steps.

19

I head back down, dump my ruck sack back in my car and take a walk to Glenridding. It is sunny and warm on the ground. The shores of Ullswater make pleasant walking.

20

21

Place Fell.

22

Ullswater Steamer.

24

Glenridding.

25

Still some mist and fog over Ambleside on my return, and on the drive home.

The main walk was about 2 miles and took less than two hours.
