School Knott & Grandsire

Name of walk School Knott & Grandsire
Date of walk 2018-09-05

On Wednesday Ged and I did a very easy 3.3 mile walk up to School Knott and Grandsire. The schools went back today, so naturally it was blue skies and sunshine, and quiet! These fells are in Wainwright’s Outlying Fell book, but this route avoids going into Bowness, and any parking fees.

01

The start of the walk is at the parking spaces on the B5284 road to Crook, just past the Golf Club and directly south of Clearbarrow. There is space for about five cars just to the right of this photo. Our route is part of the Dales Way.

Good views out to the hills.

05

Follow the sign for Hag End. The grassy route up to School Knott is on the left, the other side of the wall.

06

Head through a small gap in the wall and make for the highest point.

07

We were being watched!

Excellent reflections. We walk around the tarn.

Grandsire is the name of a popular bell ringing method. It would be an ideal walk for a future Ringers' Walk. If there are eight of us we could hum Grandsire Triples!

22

Looking south.

23

I'm humming Grandsire Doubles......not Triples!

24

Looking back to School Knott.

25

We head down to the stile at the west end of the tarn.

26

Broken stile, we just had to climb over.

We then walked back the way we came. The walk was very gentle with easy ascents. It took us a leisurely two and a half hours. I was home by lunch!
