Name of walk | Bigland Tarn & Bigland Barrow |
Date of walk | 2022-08-25 |
On Thursday afternoon Ged and I did a walk up to Bigland Tarn and Bigland Barrow. A four mile, easy circular walk that takes less than two and a half hours.
I parked in the lay-by almost opposite the start of the walk, at Haverthwaite on the B5278 road to Cark, 200m past the hamlet of Low Wood. Heading up through Birk Dault Wood. The path is part of the Cumbria Coastal Way.
The bracken is quite high, but thankfully dry.
Boarded walkways across the boggy areas.
Ruined huts above Birk Dault Wood.
Bigland Hall.
The view back the way we came.
Bigland Tarn. We stopped for lunch here.
There were loads of dragonflies and damselflies skimming over the water surface.
The hidden boathouse.
Ged on top of the boathouse.
The jetty.
We take the path on the right that is sign posted 'High Gate'. Ged stops to give a handful of long grass to a Shetland pony, a resident of Bigland Hall Stables.
The route ahead.
We exit Bigland Hall and cross the road.
Our way ahead to Bigland Barrow.
Views out to the Coniston Hills.
Looking down to Bigland Trout Fishery, an artificial tarn created by the damming of Black Beck.
Summit ahead.
The old Royal Observer Corp Orlit 'B' post on the summit of Bigland Barrow.
We don't venture up, the structure is too unstable.
Looking out towards the Leven Estuary.
Looking down on the steam train approaching Haverthwaite.
View in the direction of the Fairfield Horseshoe.
Backbarrow with Dow Crag and Coniston Old Man behind.
We retrace our steps and take the wall stile.
We head past the tarn, following the grassy track down to High Brow Edge.
We head through a couple of wall stiles and make for the path between the two stone walls beside the farm.
We follow the path between the two stone walls. At the road, we turn right then directly left down a 'road', sign posted 'unsuitable for cars'. Cottages lead off this 'road'.
Sheep in the shade.
I'm guessing the sign is meant as a joke for walkers, as only residents would risk taking their cars down here! Ged reduces his speed!
The cottages have good views.
We are still on the 'road', it takes us down to another larger road where we turn left.
We now head down to Low Wood.
The Clock Tower at Low Wood.
Beware Jaguars!
.....and pink dogs?
The clock.
The allotments at Low Wood.
Low Wood bridge view of the River Leven. From here we walk the 200m back to my car
But first a detour to the riverside.
The spectacular sunset last night from the bottom of my garden.
An excellent and easy, little walk for a sunny day.
Jo.
