Greenburn Horseshoe with Tom

Name of walk Greenburn Horseshoe with Tom
Date of walk 2025-11-21

There was snow on the fells so Tom and I decided to walk the Greenburn Horseshoe which includes Steel Fell, Calf Crag, Gibson Knott and usually Helm Crag. We parked in the lay-by nearest to the road that leads down then up to Steel Fell.

01

The farmer was sheep gathering on our way up to the fell.

02

We pass the houses and go through the gate to the open fellside.

03

Gibson Knott on the left.

We continue upwards.

08

We have views over to the Helvellyn range.

09

It is a bit of a slog with several false summits.

We now head for Gibson Knott.

35

Grasmere and Helm Crag behind Tom.

36

At this point we decide to abandon the there and back climb up to Helm Crag and head off to the left. It had started to snow.

37

We made the correct choice as visibility was lost very soon and Steel Fell disappeared in the gloom.

The walk was 8 miles and took us 5hrs and 30 minutes. A little more challenging in the snow as the paths off Calf Crag were not as visible. A pity we had to miss out Helm Crag, but we have both done it before, and no doubt will again.
