Bellringers’ Walk to Millom Park

Name of walk Bellringers' Walk to Millom Park
Date of walk 2026-04-11

We all meet in the School Ellis car park for Millom Rock Park at 8.15am. St. James Tower Captain, Andy, had planned a walk to include the Rock Park, a circuit of Millom Park and a detour to the high point of High Lowscales. Our walk was 7 miles and took just over four hours.

01

Andy's route map that doesn't include our detour to the viewing platform.

02

Notice in the car park at School Ellis. We head through the gate up to the Rock Park.

03

There are brand new display boards for each of the exhibits. I have visited on a previous walk.

04

The bellringers peruse the exhibits.

05

Geraldine and Jason are recent graduates in Geology from St. Andrew's University, so they were in their element. Andy's photo.

06

Looking down into the quarry, with view to St. George's Church spire, where the ringing will take place this afternoon.

St. James' Tower Captain Andy Pollock stars in "IndyAndy Jones and the Bell Tower of Doom". Good ol' Andy always up for a laugh!

09

We then head on a clockwise circuit of Millom Park. I have never been before, it is very beautiful and easy walking.

Blue bell woods. Should be looking spectacular in a couple more weeks.

Lovely!

The view.

25

A closer view of the church and Hodbarrow. Views across to Barrow and the bell tower of St. James.

26

Andy on a stone stile. We head out of the park to go to the high point above High Lowscales, for the views.

27

Auditioning for Hamlet? "Alas poor Ewerick..." Sadly, not a patch on Alan Rickman's Hamlet when he was in Barrow, and the nuclear waste train went past Brady's Warehouse during this same soliloquy. He had to stop and be silent on his knees for over 30 seconds (it is a bloody long train!), then continue. Alan got a round of applause after finishing that speech for being so wonderfully accomodating. A great memory to be reminded of!

28

Heading up to the farm at High Lowscales.

29

An erratic incorporated into the stone wall.

30

Andy finds a cat, but he heads for me.

31

I make a new friend. (AP) We take the track up to the high point via a couple of broken wood stiles.

32

Approaching the summit.

33

Andy has one of his Julie Andrews moments.

34

Fell view. There is still snow on the high fells.

35

Blackcombe.

36

Jason and Geraldine with the sea behind them. It is very windy up here today.

38

Some of us hunker down. Panorama: left click to enlarge, click again to return.

39

Views to Walney Island, home. Barrow left, Andy photographing us.

40

We head back to the farm the way we came, then head up through the gate and follow the track.

41

Some lovely scenery, and we never saw anyone.

42

43

Andy's photo of us tackling the only boggy section, but we all managed it without getting wet feet.

45

We can see the viewing platform up to our right, but there is no access from here.

46

View back.

47

We head for Millom Transmitter. At the end of this track is a stile back into the wood. The boys and Geraldine head back towards the Rock Park, while me, Sue and Rachel take the path to the right that leads to the viewing platform about 9 minutes further on.

49

The viewing Platform. The highest point in Millom Park.

50

It was very cold and windy on the top, but great views out.

52

53

54

To Barrow and Walney.

56

We head back down.

57

The platform behind Sue as we head back down to the track, retrace our steps, then take the path the boys took back to the car park.

58

Then we all meet up again at the Station Cafe.

Another excellent walk. Thanks to Andy and Sue for allowing me to use a few of their photos.
