Elterwater & Loughrigg Fell

Name of walk Elterwater & Loughrigg Fell
Date of walk 2024-09-18

I made an early start and parked on the roadside at Skelwith Bridge for 8am. I would walk beside the River Brathay to Elterwater and back, then head up to Loughrigg Tarn and on to Loughrigg Fell. Altogether about six miles. Another warm, clear September day with no wind.

01

I stopped on the side of Coniston Water, the mist was rising off the water.

02

Heron at Skelwith Bridge.

03

Skelwith Force, I didn't go any further as the rocks were wet and slippery this morning.

04

Reflections of the Langdale Pikes in the River Brathay.

05

06

Some excellent reflections this morning.

08

Autumn colours starting.

09

10

Classic view of the Langdale Pikes from Elterwater.

11

Belted Galloway on the route back to Skelwith Bridge. It was only 8.45am when I got back to my car, so too early to buy a coffee, so I picked up my sticks and headed up the steep road towards Loughrigg Tarn.

12

Loughrigg Tarn.

13

Loughrigg Fell

14

I detour down to the tarn.

15

Then I return to the main path. When the path divides I turn right, through a gate.

16

I follow this path to the start of the route up to Loughrigg Fell.

17

I turn right here and head upwards. My return route would rejoin here at the gate.

18

View of Lingmoor Fell and the Langdale Pikes.

19

I stopped here for a coffee, looking down on Loughrigg Tarn and over to Elterwater. Wetherlam behind it.

20

This route was very easy, mostly pitched path, then grass. Easier than the route up from The Terrace.

21

Summit cairn. Dunmail Raise on the left.

22

View to Elterwater.

23

Towards Windermere.

24

There are limited views of Grasmere from the summit, so I decide to head down via The Terrace path. From here there are superb views of Grasmere and beyond.

25

This photo is taken from a bench on The Terrace. From here I return left and take the path to Red Bank.

26

On the road I walk past High Close Arboretum and soon come to the footpath that goes off to the left. This returns me to the path I took on my way up.

27

Passing Loughrigg Tarn again. I then head back down to my car.

28

A few shots of the sunset that evening from my home on Walney Island.

A lovely end to the day.

The walk took me four and a half hours. I stopped for a coffee at Chesters by the River. I was home for 2pm. Another excellent walk.
