Name of walk | Gowbarrow Fell with Tom |
Date of walk | 2025-01-02 |
Today’s walk would be Gowbarrow Fell, on the first good weather day we have had over Christmas and New Year. The Kirkstone Pass was pretty much free from ice on the drive over, so we had plenty of time to stop at Brotherswater to take some photos before heading for Aira Force NT car park. The planned circular walk of the fell is about four and a half miles long. It would include Green Hill for the descent route and Aira Force.

Hallin Fell on the right.
This path has the best views as it takes us all the way around the fell before summitting.
View down to the steamer.
Tom at the seat by Yew Crag. The ice is increasing on the path so we put on microspikes before we head into shade. It means we no longer need to stare at the ground and can ignore the ice and enjoy the views.

Across to Hallin Fell.
View down the lake.
It is a lot colder in the shade.
There are some great views from the path.
Small waterfall.
We head away from Hallin Fell.
One more turn at the top.
Gowbarrow summit. A much better view than when I was last here to celebrate Alison's 214th Wainwright in rain and low cloud.
Summit selfie. It was freezing.
On the right is Arthur's Seat and Bonscale Pike.
Dodd and Skiddaw on the far right, to the left Clough Head, then Great Dodd.
Blencathra on the left, Great Mell Fell on the right.
We crossed the heather towards Green Hill, view back to Gowbarrow summit.

A great view down Ullswater.
We follow the path down.

View down from the bridge over Aira Force. We head down to the viewing platform.
Aira Force and a rainbow.
We take a selfie, then take the lower path back to the car park.
Always a good walk, the four and a half miles took us three and a half hours.
Jo.
