Grike and Crag Fell with Sue

Name of walk Grike and Crag Fell with Sue
Date of walk 2024-06-26

This is one of my favourite walks as Crag Fell provides such great views for minimal effort. This is a six mile walk which takes about four hours, provided that ample time is allowed for lunch and admiring the views. The walk starts from the lay-by just south of the Kinniside Stone Circle on the Cold Fell Road. The start of the path is signed. We started walking about 10am. The weather was quite hazy and the cloud was down on some of the higher fells, but the weather was due to clear, so fingers crossed that the forecast was accurate!

01

View back to the lay-by and Dent Fell. It's a little hazy today.

02

Grike ahead.

03

We make for the gate with a stile at the base of the fell.

04

We head up and cross over the stile. Views back to Blakeley Raise and Cleator Moor on the right.

05

Summit and summit shelter ahead.

06

07

Still very hazy to the west.

08

We cross marshy ground towards Crag Fell.

09

Looking back to Grike.

10

Crag Fell summit cairn. Sue ahead taking photos. The best views are from the fellside, so we head down to our lunch spot with one of the best views in The Lakes.

11

Looking across Ennerdale to Great Bourne and Bowness Knott, Starling Dodd, Red Pike and High Stile.

12

At the far end of Ennerdale is Haystacks and on the right Pillar and Steeple.

15

I like to sit right on the edge, Sue decides to sit further back and takes this photo.

16

Sue and her lunch view.

18

A close up of Bowness Knott.

19

View down to Anglers Crag.

20

After lunch we move to where the paragliders take off.

21

We take a selfie.

22

Heading back to the track.

23

From the track looking over to Whoap and Lank Rigg.

25

View towards Pillar.

26

New trees growing after all the tree felling.

27

28

29

There is still a small section of forestry left untouched.

30

Foxgloves.

31

There were some fell ponies around when we got back to the car.

32

33

The sheep were using the cars to provide some shade which had now gone.

Always a good walk and the views didn’t disappoint.
