It was a dull day so I thought I’d return to Grasmere and take a walk up Helm Crag. I parked in the lay-by on the A591 and took the footpath into Grasmere. The walk would be about six miles and take under three hours.
Looking across the field to Helm Crag.
I walk through Grasmere and take the road opposite Sam Read's bookshop. I'm now just past the turn off to Easedale Tarn.
Helm Crag.
Just beyond the house is the footpath to Helm Crag.
View down the pitched path.
Soon the steepness becomes less.
Looking across to Sour Milk Gill and the path to Easedale Tarn.
Looking to Grasmere and Loughrigg Fell. Silver How on the right.
View into Far Easedale.
View back from the grassy walk up to the brow.
It is cold and windy on the brow as I head up the rocky edge. View down to the A591 and across to a snow topped Seat Sandal, Fairfield and Great Rigg.
View of Easedale Tarn with Harrison Stickle and Pavey Ark top left.
A close up view of Grasmere Lake.
A wider view.
The Howitzer and view to Dunmail Raise. I've never bothered with the climb, the view isn't any better.
Looking down on Greenburn and the slopes of Steel Fell. I did consider returning by this route but the wind on this side changed my mind, my route up was totally sheltered, so I would return the same way.
View to Gibson Knott.
Another closer view of Easedale Tarn.
There was a brave chap who climbed to the top.
I head back down the way I came. The Lion and The Lamb on the left.
A nice view of Grasmere.
Wood carving at the start of the footpath to Helm Crag.
Once back in Grasmere I stopped for a coffee at The Heaton Cooper Studio cafe. Very small cups for an Americano with milk, after a hill walk I was hoping for double that amount for £3.45.
Jo.
