Silver How

Name of walk Silver How
Date of walk 2025-02-06

I parked in the lay-by outside Grasmere. I planned to walk up to Silver How and go over Dow Bank to Red Bank, take Loughrigg Terrace path and descend down to Lake Grasmere and then take the lakeside path back towards Grasmere. A walk of about six miles.

01

I made a stop at Waterhead on Lake Windermere to photograph the sunrise.

02

It was really cold this morning as I took the footpath into Grasmere. Helm Crag across the frozen field.

03

View to Silver How as I walk through Grasmere.

04

Another frozen field.

05

At Kelbarrow, directly opposite the boat hire, is the gate signed to Chapel Stile. I take this path between stone walls.

06

I head up and through the wall gate.

07

View back to Grasmere village.

08

The path gains height, another view back.

09

Eventually I take a right up a grassy slope that becomes a pitched path.

10

View to Grasmere lake.

11

Pitched path. The temperature had improved, it was warm enough to take my coat off.

12

View back. Dow Bank on the right.

13

Great views of Rydal Water and Grasmere.

14

Silver How summit view. It took me an hour and twenty minutes to reach the summit.

15

Near left is Helm Crag. Far left is Helvellyn, Nethermost Pike, Dollywaggon Pike, Seat Sandal, Fairfield, Great Rigg and Hart Crag.

16

Behind me Pike o'Blisco, Crinkle Crags, Bowfell and the Langdale Pikes.

17

Close up of Bowfell, Loft Crag, Pike o'Stickle and Harrison Stickle.

18

One last view before I head towards Dow Bank.

19

There are multiple paths, and it is very undulating

20

Views to Windermere and Elterwater.

21

View back to Silver How on the right.

22

Looking down on Chapel Stile and across to Lingmoor.

23

Another undulation with a cairn.

24

Looking back to where the last cairn was.

25

I pass a frozen tarn.

26

View back from my final bit of up before the descent to Red Bank. I sit on a big rock and have a drink. It has taken me the same time to reach here as it did to get to the summit. Dow Bank is not to be underestimated!

27

From my rock this is the view, with the exit gate for the way down to Red Bank on the right.

28

View of Grasmere from Loughrigg Terrace.

29

Where there is water on the terrace it is very icy, being in the shade. For that reason I don't take the short-cut down, but the main route.

30

Looking across to Silver How. The diagonal cut where the pitched path is stands out.

31

The weir.

32

I take the lakeside path as far as it goes. There are some excellent reflections today.

33

34

35

The Daffodil Hotel.

36

The walk on the road from when you leave the lakeshore path was longer than I remembered, but easy as it is downhill. The full walk took four hours and forty minutes back to Grasmere, then I stopped for lunch and a walk around the village.
