Name of walk | School Knott & Grandsire |
Date of walk | 2023-11-10 |
A solo walk up to School Knott and Grandsire, which are on either side of School Knott Tarn. A three and a half mile easy walk which takes about two hours. Today was wind free so the tarn had some lovely reflections.
The start of the walk is at the parking spaces on the B5284 road to Crook, just past the Golf Club and directly south of Clearbarrow. There is space for about five cars. The route is part of The Dales Way.
Road to Clearbarrow.
Flooded fields.
They make for some good tree colour reflections.
Deer!
It is easy to go past the sharp right turn off up to School Knott.
Once through the gate I head for the tarn. Grandsire is on my right, but the sun is still below it, so everything is in shadow.
No wind so good reflections.
Red Toadstools.
I wait while the farmer rounds up the cattle, then head up to School Knott summit.
View of Windermere from School Knott summit at 9am.
Views moving east.
Closer view of Windermere.
Back at the tarn, now at the other end. I head through the gate and follow the grassy track up to Grandsire summit.
Grandsire summit view with School Knott ahead. This would make a perfect bell ringers' walk as Grandsire is a popular bell ringing method.
Langdale Pikes in cloud.
A closer view of School Knott summit.
I'm back at the tarn again and walk back towards the outflow.
Swirly grass reflections.
The sun is now appearing above the horizon. Time to head back.
Back at the flooded fields, I head back to my car.
I had last done this walk in September 2018. It has easy ascents with good views for such little effort.
