Bigland Tarn & Bigland Barrow

Name of walk Bigland Tarn & Bigland Barrow

It was a nice day, so Ged and I did a walk up to Bigland Tarn and Bigland Barrow. A four mile, easy circular walk that takes less than two and a half hours. I parked in the lay-by almost opposite the start of the walk, at Haverthwaite on the B5278 road to Cark, 200m past the hamlet of Low Wood. Heading up through Birk Dault Wood. The path is part of the Cumbria Coastal Way. We cross the road to the public footpath sign and head up through the woods.

The jetty.

07

We contine on and take the path on the right that is sign posted 'High Gate'. Then we cross the main road and take the path opposite. The sign post ahead is where we come back to after the summit, which is seen on the left.

08

Looking down to Bigland Trout Fishery, an artificial tarn created by the damming of Black Beck.

09

Belted Galloway cattle, including a bull, on the path, so we head left a bit before going up to the summit.

We head north for the view.

18

We make our way back trough the cattle, they hadn't moved!

19

At the sign post we cross over the wall stile to the tarn.

20

21

We head past the tarn, following the grassy track down to High Brow Edge. Great views!

22

We follow the path between the two stone walls. At the road, we turn right then directly left down a 'road', sign posted 'unsuitable for cars'. Cottages lead off this 'road'. I'm guessing the sign is meant as a joke for walkers, as only residents would risk taking their cars down here! Ged reduces his speed!

23

One of the cottages. At the bottom of the road we turn left, then take a right for the road down to Low Wood.

24

We stop and say hi to the chickens.

25

Clock Tower at Low Wood.

26

Low Wood bridge over the River Leven. From here we walk the 200m back to my car.

Always an easy walk with good views for little effort. Although spring and summer are better, as my previous walks here will show.
