Dale Head in Snow

Name of walk Dale Head in Snow
Date of walk 2024-02-26

I fancied a walk in some snow so I drove to the NT car park at Honister, arriving at 9am and headed up the track that leads directly to the summit. It will take about an hour. My return route would detour to Yew Crag Quarries and Mines, an interesting assortment of ruined buildings, quarries and tunnels.

01

View back to the Honister Slate Mine from the quick and easy route up to Dale Head. It is only a mile and a quarter to the summit. Grey Knotts with snow on it behind.

02

An old mine building on the right of the path.

03

View back as I head above the snow line.

04

Another view back as I go into the cloud base.

05

The cloud base comes and goes as I reach the summit cairn. It is very cold and windy.

06

View over to Hindscarth.

07

View in the direction of High Spy.

08

View down the Newlands Valley towards Skiddaw as the cloud base rises.

09

10

I do a bit more crunching through the snow then head down a bit to where there is some sunshine. I leave the path crossing the fence line to explore the old mine workings and ruins.

11

The fellside is littered with old mine buildings.

12

13

14

One of the tunnels.

15

16

I head to the west for the views of Fleetwith Pike and Buttermere.

18

View down the Honister Pass. Now both Buttermere and Crummock Water can be seen.

19

20

Blue skies! I head further down to explore more old ruins.

21

Old winch used on the railtrack. The routes up to Fleetwith Pike summit beyond.

22

23

Looking over at the via ferrata on the side of Fleetwith Pike.

24

View down on Honister Slate Mine.

25

I check out a few more ruins.

26

27

Then I make my way down a bit further before re-crossing the fence and joining the route I took up.

An easy walk for a cold day.
